The Basilica Cistern, known in Turkish as the Yerebatan Sarnici, is a fantastic Roman aqueduct located underground in the heart of the Old Town of Istanbul. With 336 marble columns supporting the roof, walking through the Basilica Cistern is like walking back in time. Enter the Cistern by going underground where you will be guided along a wooden walkway through the many marble columns. Peer into the water as fish swim past in the murky waters. At the end of the boardwalk, two giant columns are supported by large medusa heads.
