Phu Quoc Island used to be a sleepy and tranquil island backwater that was often overlooked by foreign and local travelers alike. But thanks to its wealth in heavenly beaches and Vietnam’s burgeoning tourism, this beautiful haven has briskly transformed into a can’t-miss beach respite for sun-seeking travelers and Western expats. Known as the ultimate beach destination in Vietnam, the island truly has a spectacular tropical grandeur that would give Phuket Island a run for its money. Here, tourists get to soak up the sun, delve into the fascinating Vietnamese culture, and tickle their gusto with oodles of toothsome seafood staples.
Planning on visiting this large beautiful island? Make sure to consider these great suggestions, as you create a travel itinerary to this blissful island paradise.
Spend a day at any of its beaches
The stunning beaches of Phu Quoc Island are clearly the biggest tourist draws of this paradise. Named by ABC News as “The World’s Cleanest and Most Beautiful Beaches” in 2008, these seaside delights are simply gorgeous, amazing and idyllic. Not only do these beaches offer clear turquoise waters, but they also have powdery white sands that are lined majestically with coconut trees.
What are the best beaches on Phu Quoc Island? As far as I’m concerned, the beach beaches in this Vietnamese destination are the Ganh Dau Beach, Sao Beach and Long Beach.
Visit the Phu Quoc Prison
Get a historical view of the bloody Vietnam War, from a unique perspective by visiting the Phu Quoc Prison, which is one of the most popular and intriguing attractions on Phu Quoc Island. An epiphany of the miseries of colonialism, this historic facility has an eerie feel to it, displaying some of horrors that the prisoners have to go through every day through life-size models and reenactments. What’s more, this prison has a small museum in which some of the prison’s history is explained.
A word of advice, please don’t bring the kids with you, as the facility is quite gruesome. Plus, children will easily get bored in this place, especially to those who aren’t overly fond of history.
Eat sumptuous seafood at the Night Market
When nighttime comes, head off to its buzzing Night Market, and get a taste of its highly acclaimed seafood dishes, such as the claypot catfish, caramel shrimps, stuffed squid, seafood hotpot and crab with tamarind sauce.
Experience the island’s green and vibrant environment
The island’s dense environment is what really makes a trip to this destination a worthwhile experience. The National Park, for instance, is a rare gem where you can catch sight of some of Asia’s rarest and most charming species of animals and plants. Based on the studies conducted by the Vietnam-Russia Tropical Center, the park is home to over 1,000 higher plant species that include the endangered and ultra rare Paphiopedilum callosum.
As for the wildlife, the park has more than 200 species that include hornbills, otters, silver langur, long-tailed macaque, lorises, and a whole lot more.
Indulging in an epic snorkeling adventure is an absolute must for anyone traveling to Phu Quoc Island. Here, there are tons of resorts that offer snorkeling trips to the northern or southern tips of the island. For 20 USD only, a snorkeling trip on the island will take to the kaleidoscopic underwater world of the island. As a bonus, you will be taking a layover at one of the island’s numerous pearl farms. Sounds exciting, right?
Don’t forget to take pictures of the island’s legendary sunset, when the sun starts to submerge in the water.
