The Best U.S. Navy Museums

Our world and our past has not been perfect and many lives have been laid down to defend us not only on shore and air, but also at sea. All over the world we have wonderful naval museums to give us a glimpse of the past and battles which we have faced during different epochs and remind of us of great sacrifices done for peace in the form of fascinating museums.

Hampton Roads Naval Museum, Norfolk

Naval history is important and drags you in, so of course this museum dedicated to 235 years of studying naval history is a must see. The museum has in custody the remains of the USS Cumberland, a 50-gun ship of the United States Navy. Also there is a permanent exhibit of the ex-USS ship Wisconsin.

National Museum of the United States Navy, Washington D.C.

This museum shows exhibits from the Revolutionary War, the Antarctic Exhibition, World War I and World War II and submarine innovations. As a visitor you will be able to see through a submarine periscope, learning about the deep sea drenched in another era with the scent of the past surrounding you. Recently the Cold War Gallery has opened, showing artefacts from the Korean War as well as the interactive exhibit called “The Lion’s Den”.

National Naval Aviation Museum, Pensacola

It’s the world’s largest Naval Aviation Museum and one of the most visited museums in Florida and no wonder why: you get to see more than 150 restored beautiful aircraft. The museum has nearly 350,000 square feet of exhibit space. Also, admission is free!

Great Lakes Naval Museum

Since the opening of this navy base everyone was puzzled by Roosevelt's decision to put it in such a curious place, so far away from salt water. After closing the base to become a museum, the same thing happened once more to be reopened as a museum again to anyone who wishes to visit the third previously biggest naval base in the country. All its artifacts tell the story of the museum and base in great detail.

Puget Sound Navy Museum, Bremerton

Any visitor can see the naval history of the region and experience what it’s like and what it was like to be a sailor through the exhibitions displayed in the museum about the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, the USS John Stennis aircraft carrier and special operation submarines. Also the museum is handicap accessible, admission is free!

Naval War College Museum, Newport

A personal favorite of former US presidents to visit and also be lecturers at the college, such as Roosevelt and Captain Alfred Thayer Mahan. It is the original site of the United States Naval War College. It also contains the world’s first torpedo establishment and a memorial for men and women who served at the US naval torpedo station.

U.S. Navy Seabee Museum, Port Hueneme

The mission of this museum is to select, collect, preserve and display for everyone who wishes to see the history of the Naval Construction Force, wider known as the SEABEES and the U.S. Navy Civil Engineer Corps. It is also the second oldest of the official Navy Museums in the United States.

Submarine Force Museum, Groton

It’s the home of the world’s finest collection of submarine artifacts, and the only submarine museum operated by the US Navy. The museum traces the development of the “Silent Service” from David Bushnell’s Turtle which was used in the revolutionary war to the Ohio and Virgina class submarines. The museum holds over 33,000 artifacts, photographs and documents.

U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis

Have you ever wondered how is it like to be a midshipman? A tour of this wonderful museum will give you a taste of what it’s actually like to have such commitment made by 4000 strong Brigade of Midshipmen. It is the training ground for officers of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.
