The city’s history dates back 3,000 years, and if museums are your bailiwick,there are many to explore. Beijing’s museums explore the city’s history and cultures.
The National Museum of China
Located on the eastern side of Tiananmen Square, this museum is a combination of two previous museums: the Museum of Chinese History and the Museum of Chinese Revolution. Each are housed in separate wings. The National Museum of China is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. March 1 to June 30; 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. from July 1 to Aug. 31; 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. September 1 through October 31 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from November 1 through February 29 (on leap years).
Chinese Ethnic Museum
This museum features exhibits celebrating the traditions, customs and even foods of the different ethnic groups that have inhabited the area over time. The Chinese Ethnic Museum is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The Military Museum of the Chinese People's Revolution
Situated on the No.9 Fuxing Road, visitors will find this museum. Inside, exhibits include more than 1,000 photographs and other materials that showcase China’s military development.
If you want to see the sights, you’ll find beauty in natural spaces, the architecture of the city or even the Beijing Planetarium.
Beijing Happy Valley
The city’s most popular amusement park has more than 1,000 exhibits and rides in six themed regions to explore. Thrill rides, sculptures, music festivals and other events are ensure that there’s something for everyone here. The park is open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. during peak season and from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the off-season.
Kangxi Grassland/Yuyuantan Park
This beautiful park includes multiple gardens, an ancient pine forest and a nearby “island.” This park includes the Cherry Garden and the Liuchun Garden, which features roses, magnolias and forsythia. From June to August, visitors can explore from 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.; from December to March, the park is open from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The Beijing Planetarium is considered “a palace for science.” The planetarium includes 3D and 4D theaters, two astronomical observatories and an exhibition hall. During peak season, it is open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. In the off-season, it’s open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
If your itinerary includes shopping, there are several popular business centers, antique markets, department and feature stores within the city limits. Book lovers will enjoy exploring the city’s famous bookstores. During the summer, most shopping centers are open from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. In the off season, some shops close and 8 p.m. and some close at 9 p.m.
