Royal Navies in other countries had collections of models and objects at this time, but they were not open to the public and are, therefore, not regarded as museums. In the museum you will find many objects from Kartago, Pompei, and Egypt, material from Voltaire's bed curtain, as well as animals in spirit bottles. Furthermore, there is a wide range of vessel's equipment through time, and the museum has Norway's largest collection of ship models. The museum's art collection also well documents sailing war ships, as seen through the eyes of artists. The latest addition to the museum is the Kobben class submarine KNM Utstein, built in 1965, which is on land and open to the public. The Navy Museum has photo archives and a library which houses 25,000 volumes, of which 12,000 are specialist military literature. The museum also owns vessel's log books dating from 1814 to present day, in addition to ship and construction drawings. Opening hours: May-September Every day 12:00-16:00 Oct.-April Sunday 12:00-16:00 Closed at public holidays. Free entrance. Guided tours every day, by appointment. « less
