5 Air Shows Every Aviation Enthusiast Must Visit

January 29, 2014

For the aviation enthusiasts, little things bring more joy than a good air show. While Open Days are an amazing opportunity to see aircraft up close and flying, some air shows just pack a little extra atmosphere that makes them unforgettable.

So, without further ado, here are five air shows you must see before you die.

EAA AirVenture Oshkosh

Held at each summer in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, it is the largest air show in the United States. The show lasts for a week, and during that period Oshkosh’s control tower becomes the busiest in the world! This year’s air show will happen from July 28 to August 3. Attendance is expected to be of around 10,000-15,000 aircraft, and 800,00-1,000,000 people – you better be one of them!

Flying Legends

The Holy Grail for vintage aircraft lovers, Flying Legends takes place every year at the beginning of July. The event is held at Duxford in England, where you will also find one of the finest aviation museums in the world. This air show is special in the fact that it is comprised solely of warbirds and vintage aircraft. The organizers, The Fighter Collection, arguably hold Europe’s finest collection of flying relics.

Royal International Air Tattoo

Still in England, Fairford’s Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) is the world’s largest military air show. RIAT is held over the third weekend of July, and attracts crowds of about 150,000 every year. The air show has a number of ‘firsts’, and is famous for being a showcase of aviation and military advances from around the world in a more friendly atmosphere, without the commercial commitment of Farnborough Airshow.

Paris Airshow, Le Bourget

The world’s largest and oldest air show, established in 1909, the Paris Air Show happens every odd year, and is as traditional as you can get. The air show is a commercial event where you can expect the biggest and most impressive sales in the aerospace industry to take place. Thus, as you’d expect, all of the aviation industry brings their very best into the game to try to seal those deals – and while you might not be buying anything yourself, you can watch the show as if you were!

Midnight Summer Air Show

During Finnish summer, days are extremely long – so long the sun doesn’t really set at times. Finland put two and two together and one of the most interesting aviation experiences was born – the Midnight Summer Air Show. Set in Kauhava Air Force Base, quite a drive from Helsinki, it originated as a summer party for the families of pilots, and featured the Finnish Midnight Hawks training from 7PM to 12AM. The air show has gradually expanded, and now many countries send their own display teams to Kauhava. Ever wondered how a formation loop looks like under the midnight sun? Go find out!
