Budget Hotel Chains: Names To Remember

February 19, 2014

In some cases, the most expensive or second most expensive part of traveling can be the accommodations – where you spend your nights. If you’re looking for a way to stretch your travel budget, finding an inexpensive yet comfortable hotel or motel is a great way to do that. With a little research, it can be done, no matter where your travel takes you.

Budget Hotels in the United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom and Ireland, Travelodge is a great option. Depending on when you stay and where you are, a single room might cost anywhere from 35-54 pounds per night, in Ireland. The chain offers special deals – like a 35 pound per night Spring Break deal. In Dublin-area and London area motels, you can choose from twin rooms (with two win beds) a double, a double plus (double bed and twin bed) or a family room (with a double bed and possibly a pullout).

In London, there are 15 Travelodge locations, ranging in price from €62-€94 per night.  Some locations provide a shower, but no bath in the room, and have single, twin, double or family-style rooms available. Unlike motels and hotels in the United States, these hotels don’t provide toiletries in the room. Travelers can purchase toothpaste and toothbrushes, shower gel and shampoo from vending machines in the motel.

The Premier Inn chain offers more than 650 locations across the United Kingdom and Ireland. Many Premier locations offer facilities for business meetings – including projection equipment, catering services and meeting rooms. Travelers can choose from double and single rooms, as well as accommodations for individuals with disabilities. Rooms include Wi-Fi access. Some Premier locations offer free stays for travelers under the age of 16. Breakfast is available, and many locations have restaurants attached. For travelers under the age of 16, breakfast is free of charge in most restaurants.

Budget Hotels in the U.S. and Canada

If you’re looking for a budget motel in the United States and Canada, Motel 6 has more than 1,100 locations to choose from. For example, if you’re traveling to Toronto, Canada, you’ll find approximately 8 Motel 6 locations within 50 miles, ranging in price from $49.99 to $159 Canadian. Rooms at Motel 6 typically include two double beds or one queen.  Motel 6 offers free morning coffee, expanded cable, and local calls. Some locations include Wi-Fi throughout the building. Kids under 16 stay free. In the United States, rates typically begin around $45.99 per night.

There are 26 Holiday Inn locations in Toronto, Canada, including Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express locations. Several are pet-friendly. Rates vary from $99.95 to 159.95. Holiday Inn Express locations include rooms with two double beds, a queen bed with pullout couch or a king-size bed. Many of these rooms include high speed wired Internet access and a dataport. Travelers can choose from smoking or non-smoking rooms.

Budget Motels in France

Across France, the Accor hotel chain offers more than 2,100 locations to choose from. Their lowest-price line of hotels, according to Fodor’s, is the Hotel Formule 1 brand. While the rooms may be small at the 250 Hotel Formule 1 locations across France, there are rooms for two or three individuals per room and the rooms feature Wi-Fi access, a flat screen television and a quick-wash corner. If you want simple accommodations, this is a good bet.
