Cape Town: There’s Something for Everyone
The capital city of South Africa is a great place for visitors to explore a city rich in history and experiences that lead to unforgettable memories. The city is abuzz with activities, shops and restaurants, as well as family oriented activities. Cape Town has something for everyone.
There are multiple companies that can and will take individuals and groups on tours of the South African city. If you want to see wild animals, there’s a wildlife safari at Aquila Game Reserve. If the idea of an aerial tour gets your blood pumping, you can take a helicopter or even balloon tour. Other tours include a mountain bike or open double-decker bus tour. You can even take a cage dive in the waters around the island.
If you’re looking for something a little different that isn’t a tour, the city is rich with experiences for active individuals. You can take a cable car up Table Mountain and rappel more than 100 meters to the ground, or, there’s another route down for the less-adventurous: another cable car. Around the cape peninsula, visitors can join a caving expedition and explore more than 100 caves.
Learn Robben Island’s History
For those who want to explore one of Cape Town’s most famous locations, there’s Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for more than a decade. The island is a UNESCO World Heritage site, where a museum pays homage to the island’s history as a prison, for political prisoners and those accused and convicted for other crimes. Its most famous prisoner was perhaps Nelson Mandela.
If you’re looking for a taste of authentic South African cuisines, you’ll find a range of foods at Cape Town’s restaurants. With a little exploration and patience, you’ll find almost anything you desire, from samosas to braaivleis (barbecue), Mozambican peri-peri prawns or even a sampler plate of pan-fried spring bok, ostrich and kudu.
For Musem Lovers
If you want to broaden your artistic horizons, Cape Town is full of great museums, celebrating a variety of topics.
There’s the Iziko South African Museum, with exhibits related to science, history, even whales and dinosaurs. Another popular museum is the Koopmans-De Wet House, which celebrates the life of Marie Koopmans-De Wet, who worked with the widows and orphans of the Boer Republics, during wartime.
The Castle of Good Hope is a 335-year-old colonial building that was once the replenishment station for the Dutch East India Company.
The Pan-African Market and Greenmarket Square are great for shoppers who want to take home South African mementos or souvenir clothing. Baraka is great for wire woven baskets, authentic African masks, pop-art and Indian leather notebooks.
Nightlife, Bars and Clubs
If you want to experience Cape Town’s night life or just want a drink, you’re in luck. The city is home to Brewers & Union, a former church converted into a brewery and bar. Brewers and Union offers a range of eats like artisan cured meats, beer-inspired dishes and organic breakfasts, lunches and dinners.
Shimmy Beach Club is a beach-side club that features whisky and vodka tasting rooms, an outdoor hydraulic stage, infinity pool and even a private beach, in addition to a fine dining restaurant and two bars.
For men who want to indulge in a gentleman’s night out, Mavericks is an iconic gentleman’s club in Cape Town, with couches, semi-private booths, comfortable restaurant-style tables and high chairs at the bar. The VIP room is above the general area.
