10 Hangover Cures From Around the World
New Year’s Day is often a day where individuals wish for a fresh start. It’s also a day when people are recovering from a night of partying, which, for some, likely included a myriad of alcoholic beverages. If you’re looking for a remedy to fix your pounding head and upset stomach, consider any of these tried and true hangover cures from around the world.
In the United States, it’s not uncommon for people to drop a couple of Alka-Seltzer tabs into a glass of water and drink the fizzy concoction. It’s so common, in fact, that the company created a morning formulation specifically designed for hangover cures. Along with 500 milligrams of aspirin and 65 milligrams of caffeine, this product is meant to give you a burst of energy while it knocks out your post-party headache.
In the Philippines, a common cure for a hangover is a dish called balut. This consists of a duck embryo that is poached alive and eaten out of the shell. The beak is often included in this dish. Experts say that taking in protein is a perfect way to soothe a hangover, but this cure might be best for those who have strong stomachs, even with the too-much-alcohol hangover.
3. Dried Bull Testicle
In Sicily, Italy, natives swear by a bit of dried bull penis as a perfect way to cure a hangover.
Throughout Italy, residents with hangovers reach for a cup of strong espresso to sooth their hangovers. Italians believe that a dose of very strong caffeine is just the thing to make the pain go away.
5. Irn Bru
Scottish partiers crack open a can of Irn Bru, a fizzy orange drink that they say is made from girders. Historians say that this drink has a long and storied history in Scotland. Before 1947, the drink was known as Iron Brew, but a law that required .125 grams of iron per fluid ounce to be added to any drink bearing the word “Iron” in the name, pushed the makers of this carbonated beverage to drop the O and rename the drink Irn Bru.
6. Kaya Toast
This Indonesian hangover cure includes two slices of Malaysian white bread, dark soy, coconut jam, salted butter and a soft boiled egg. This remedy combines carbohydrates, protein, cholesterol to help metabolize the alcohol in your system and soy to increase the salt in your system.
7. Leche de Tigre
In Peru, after the party, revelers grab a shot of leche de tigre, or milk of the tiger. Surprisingly, or perhaps not so surprisingly, this drink contains no milk. Instead, it is the liquid that comes from ceviche. The protein and salt in the drink make this a great hangover cure.
Mexicans swear by a spicy soup made of tripe, called menudo. The combination of cow stomach and spices are thought to distract your mind and body from the hangover, while stimulating your sense and clearing your head. This remedy is not for the faint of heart.
9. Oregano Tea
In Ecuador, after a night of partying, revelers seek a home remedy tea made of oregano to soothe the symptoms of a hangover.
In Japan, a popular home remedy is umeboshi, or dried sour plums. These pickled plums are rich in citric and phosphoric acids, which help to break down lactic and pyruvic acids, among others in the body. Indulging in these plums after a night of partying in order to kill the hangover is said to eliminate or lessen imbalances caused by situations like too much drinking.
If your New Year’s Eve party left you hungover, try the methods above and remember to drink plenty of water!
