6 Exciting Winter Getaways In The Americas

December 3, 2013

Winter presents a unique view of the world when it comes to travel, depending on where you are. In the northern hemisphere, things are chilly and often covered in ice, while down south, travelers are warm and toasty.

Even though the northern countries are stuck in the grip of winter, many locales still allow for an adventure. If you’re looking for a warm and toasty destination, the southern Americas are the perfect choice – with weather in the 70s (21 celsius) in December and later.

Cuba

It’s only been a few years since the U.S. Treasury Department allowed travelers to visit the island nation through educational excursions known as “people-to-people” tours. These getaways encourage travelers to have contact with the Cuban people and learn about the country’s culture and heritage. It’s not cold and snowy in Cuba this time of year, so if you’re able to arrange one of these trips, you’ll stay nice and toasty while learning about a country where U.S. residents previously could not travel under most circumstances.

Chiapas, Mexico

Chiapas is another destination that has a rich cultural heritage. Explore the cobblestone streets, jungles and Maya-speaking villages of the country’s southernmost state; you can even experience the harvest, indulge in spa luxury or explore nature at the Agrovia-finca Resort.

Whistler, British Columbia, Canada

Whistler Blackcomb is a premier destination for alpine skiers and snowboarders. Known as the site of the 2010 Winter Olympics, the resort town offers adventures for skiers of all skill-levels. Whether you’re into backcountry, cross-country or even heli-skiing, you’ll have the time of your life. You can also go on dog sledding or snowmobiling excursions.

Miami, Florida

If you’re looking for a warmer locale without leaving the United States, Miami is a great choice. In early January, the city hosts Art Deco weekend, while February brings the Coconut Grove Art Festival and the South Beach Wine and Food Festival.

North Pole, Alaska

No winter destination list would be complete without Santa’s House in North Pole, Alaska. During the month of December, this Fairbanks suburb hosts a winter festival to kick off the holiday season. Residents and visitors enjoy a fireworks display, a community tree lighting event and a Christmas in Ice ribbon cutting ceremony, just to name a few. You can also go to Santa’s House, a storefront in town, to try and get a peek at Santa’s list, or to tell the big man himself what you want for Christmas.

Churchill, Manitoba, Canada

This city is the place to be if you want a front-row seat to the most spectacular light show on earth, the Aurora Borealis.  The city is located directly below the Aurora oval, so they get a great view of the colorful natural display all throughout the winter. If you’re lucky, you might find tour groups that can help you explore the area while enjoying the Northern Lights.

No matter what experience you’re looking for during the winter months, the Americas offer unique and fun destinations that lend themselves to memorable winter time trips and excursions.
